Pope asks leaders to work for peace - Vatican City
Pope John Paul II greeted 1998 with a call for world leaders to strive for justice and peace as preparation for the millennium.
"No one is excused from this responsibility." the pope said at a New Year's Day Mass as St. Peter's Basilica. -- From wire reports.
Opinion: Catholic theology takes the position that "Peace with God" takes precedence over human peace. In other words it is better to have human wars than to sacrifice justice. The popes statements appear to place justice and human peace on the same level of importance.
