St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do thou, O prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.

The Angelus

The Angelus is recited at three particular times during the day; 6 am, 12 noon, and 6 pm. Traditionally it is recited kneeling while a bell is rung.
The Angelus is replaced by the Regina Coeli during Eastertide, and is not used between the Liturgy of Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday) and the Easter Vigil. This practice was first instituted in 1743 A.D.
The Angelus has roots in the eleventh century. Pope Gregory IX (d. 1241) decreed that a bell should be rung each evening to remind the faithful to pray for the Crusades. The Franciscans adopted the custom of saying three Hail Mary's when they heard the evening bell, and in 1269 A.D. St. Bonaventure urged the faithful to adopt the custom of the Franciscans of saying three Hail Mary's as the evening bell was rung.
The morning recitation came from a monastic tradition of saying three Hail Mary's in response to a morning bell rung at prime.
A partial indulgence is granted to those who devoutly recite the Angelus according to the seasons of the Church.

History
The institution of the Angelus is by some ascribed to Pope Urban II, by some to Pope John XXII. Pope Callixtus III (1455-1458) commended the practice as a prayer for protection against the Turkish invasions of his time. The triple recitation is ascribed to Louis XI of France, who in 1472 A.D. ordered it to be said thrice daily. The form of the prayer was standardized by the 17th century.
With regard to the manner of ringing the Angelus it seems sufficient to note that the triple stroke repeated three times, with a pause between, seems to have been adopted from the very beginning.
Another understanding is that the Angelus is a devotional prayer in honor of the Incarnation, which is recited morning, noon and evening, when the Angelus bell is ringing.
It started in the 14th century, but then only the evening prayer was recited. In the 15th century, the morning prayer was added, in honor of the Resurrection, and in the 16th century was added the noon prayer in memory of the Passion.
During the Easter Season (from Easter to Pentecost), the Regina Coeli is recited instead.

Neither the Angelus nor the Regina Coeli is said on Good Friday or Holy Saturday.
