In The United StatesCatholic States are Pro-AbortionThe Catholic Correlation A gentleman from Putnam, Conn., sent FTM a copy of a letter and a statistical study he has compiled which he has sent to every Catholic bishop heading a diocese in the United States. Here’s the letter: ‘The popular opinion that Catholics are pro-life is a myth. The following scandalous examples of Catholics being pro-abortion are based on selected votes concerning abortion in Congress during 1997: “1) The four most Catholic states — Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Connecticut all with Catholic populations exceeding 40%, have eight pro-abortion senators, including four Catholics. “2) Ten of the 36 U.S. senators opposed to the ban on partial-birth infanticide are Catholic. They are Susan Collins (Maine), Christopher Dodd (Connecticut), Richard Durbin (Illinois), Tom Harkin (Iowa), Edward Kennedy (Massachusetts), John Kerry (Massachusetts), Barbara Mikuiski (Maryland), Carol Moseley-Braun (Illinois), Patty Murray (Washington), and Jack Reed (Rhode Island). "3) There is a strong negative correlation between the election of pro-life legislators and the percentage of Catholics in the population. For example, the five most pro-life slates (Utah, Oklahoma, Idaho, Wyoming, and Kansas) have only an 8.2% average Catholic percentage, while the five most pro-abortion states (Hawaii, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Rhode Island) have a whopping 44.3% average Catholic percentage. "The main reason for this deplorable situation is the failure of the U.S. Catholic bishops to publicly rebuke Catholic pro-abortion voters and legislators. Their silence sends the message to Catholics and other Americans of goodwill that voting for pro-abortion legislators is no big deal, and that abortion has nothing to do with the Fifth Commandment." Attached was the author’s 18-page document, referenced with The Almanac of American Politics (1998), Congressional Quarterly (1997), The Official Catholic Directory for 1996. and the 1998 Catholic Almanac. The author superimposed maps of congressional districts over dioceses to determine the percentage of Catholic voters, and then tallied legislators’ votes on seven major pieces of abortion-related legislation: international "family planning" aid, partial-birth infanticide, banning abortions in military’ hospitals, Medicaid-funded abortions, bans on abortions in federal prisons, and so on. The 18 pages of documentation support the claims made in his letter, but for those policy wonks among our readership, the full research is available from Robert Kendra, 56 Mantup Rd., Putnam, CT 06260.
