Symbolism over Substance

By dan holman

The Ten Commandment standoff in Montgomery, Alabama is largely symbolic. It has little to do with reality. It is meaningless won or lost.

The legal doctrine of “The Separation of Church and State” began with the 1948 Everson v. Board of Education case. It was taken from an opinion Thomas Jefferson made to a group of Danbury Baptists regarding paying minister’s salaries with taxpayer money. Jefferson rightly condemned the practice. It was in this letter that Jefferson introduced the doctrine of separation of church and state.

The bible teaches that God established four jurisdictions: self-government, family government, church government, and civil government. All authority is limited and subject to God’s authority.
